Making the Most of Construction Data Reports

If you are an HBW subscriber, you’ve got leads, a lot of leads.  With new permits and construction data being added to the HBW database regularly, chances are you have more reports than time, so making the most of them is essential.

Using construction data reports for lead generation is an obvious application of the reports and holds great value for your business, but beyond leads there are numerous other ways to use the reports to build your business.  Here is a quick list of the top ways to make construction data reports work for you:

  • Get Organized – Now that you have leads and reports, you will need to organize your data in a way that it can be shared, accessed and used by your sales team.  There are a variety of helpful CRM (Customer Relation Management) systems and software from which to choose, and it is just a matter of taking the time to find the one that is the right fit and can grow with your business.
  • Sort it Out – Where is your target audience? Which regions or counties do you want to reach?  Sort out your reports by your priority, from geographic location to type of construction.
  • Conduct Research – Market research is vital to an evolving business. By using HBW construction data reports to conduct your own market research, you can identify areas where your services are in high demand, as well as chart seasonal fluctuations and plan accordingly.  Market stats provide you with a snapshot of the activity level in your counties of interest, as well as reflect the trend over the past year.
  • Scope it Out – Staying on top and ahead of the competition is important for any business, and builder summary reports can give you the latest on your competition’s latest construction activity. For any given timeframe, you can easily and instantly learn how many projects a home or pool builder has permitted, counties and areas where they are concentrated and the average value of their construction projects.
  • Keep an Eye on Trends – HBW has over twenty years of historical data on file which makes it easy for your business to evaluate construction trends and history of properties, enabling you to identify homes, commercial buildings and pools in need of your services.

By receiving up-to-date permit data, you are not only receiving the latest construction leads, but you have the opportunity to stay in the know on industry trends, local demand and the competition’s construction activity.

Customers Expect and Demand Technology

Truth be told, the construction industry has a reputation for being one of the slower industries for adopting and integrating new technology.  According to a survey conducted by KPMG, the construction industry isn’t taking full advantage of new technologies for workflow management and building performance monitoring.

From the surface, this data can be quite surprising considering the massive and impressive structures that are being constructed and improved upon each day.  Although the construction industry is well-positioned for technological disruption, construction professionals seem the most difficult to motivate and shift their mindset.  The above listed survey found that most construction firms are waiting for competitors to take the first step toward the adoption of technologies to streamline their workflows and improve their data collection including but not limited to integrated project management information systems, remote monitoring, smart sensors, robotics and automation.

In addition to technology making workflow and project management easier, technology is also in high demand from consumers.  Think about it… How do you expect your own customer service experience to be when buying something for you or your family?  Chance are that you expect immediate responses, one-click access to an estimate or report, ability to swipe, scan or purchase online… The list goes on.

The same ease of access that you expect in your own experience should be offered to your customers.  The big players in technology and retail from Amazon and Apple to Google services are used by consumers daily, no matter the industry. Additionally, consumers are doing their research and becoming more educated about their purchase before committing to any one service or product.  For this reason, you and your sales team should be prepared for an informed customer and have information ready and easy to view from your website, social media profiles, emails, etc.

Technology can and should be seamlessly integrated into your company’s overall customer service experience.  From how they learn about your services to communication, billing and project status reports, the way you interact with your client reflects your professionalism and knowledge.  Even the most skilled of craftsman can come across as inexperienced when communicating through antiquated methods or providing information through outdated literature and publications.  Essential and easy upgrades include mobile-friendly websites, online invoicing and payment processing, live project updates and status reports, active social media profiles, online chat for customer inquiries and support, online scheduling/booking of consultations and more. While these upgrades won’t happen overnight and certainly won’t address the industry’s slower pace for adopting other advanced technologies, you can gradually bring your customer engagement into the present, strengthening your business and future client relations.

5 Ways to a Better Landing Page

As a construction professional, chances are website design is not one of your top priorities.  And although website design can and should be left to the professionals, the content and image that you present should have your signature all over it.  Nobody knows your business, and your clients, better than you, and having a landing page that has a greater probability of converting viewers to customers will require some time and input from those who know your audience and brand.

When reaching out to HBW leads, it is important to provide easy ways for your prospects to learn about your product, request a free quote and contact you for more information.  By sending them to a landing page, whether it be the home page of your website or a page designed for a specific promotion, you can give prospects a one-click entry into their new home or remodel.  Here are five tips for making a landing page worth the visit:

  1. Set a Goal – Before you can make your landing page effective, you will need to know what defines it as effective. In other words, what is your goal for the visitor?  Do you want them to watch a video? Request an estimate? Click on a link? Share your page on social media?  Once you identify your goal, designing your landing page should be revolved around getting the site visitor to that next step.
  2. Know Your Audience – It is easy to fall into the “safe zone” when creating a web page. There are hundreds of templates out there that make creating a landing page easy for you, but it may not be the answer for them.  To create a page that makes an impact it will need to stand out from the crowd.  One way to make it “pop” is to design the page specifically for the audience you are seeking to capture.  For example, if you are approaching new homeowners, have images and content that speak specifically to the concerns of new homeowners.  While casting a wide net may work well for some marketing efforts, your landing page should be very specific to the voice of your audience.  You can always create and revise landing pages for other campaigns and audiences in the future.
  3. Develop Content – More than just for the purpose of improving SEO, your copy and content should be compelling and drive the viewer to your goal for the page. Most landing pages will have general blocks including headline, body text, call to action and footer.  Your headline should be just a few words that grab their attention.  The body of the text should be your primary message, clear and concise.  Your call to action is what will be defined by your goal (the action you want them to take), and your footer should hold your contact information, social links and standard company information.
  4. Create a Call to Action – A call to action should align with your goal. The method you use should be clear and all content should drive the visitor to the form, link or buttons that you ultimately want the viewer to “click”.  Your call to action should be one of the first things that the page visitor sees and it should stand out visually (bold, color block, highlight) so that it simply can’t be missed.
  5. Choose Strong Images – Although it is easy to want to dress a landing page up to make it more appealing to the eye, images without intent often do more harm than good. One powerful image that is interesting and engaging will make a stronger first impression than multiple images that are simply filling blank space.  Choosing just one or two powerful images can be one of the most challenging of tasks because it requires committing to a specific message and perspective, but effective landing pages are just that… specific and focused.

While you will ultimately need to spend more time on your jobsite than on your website, you may find that by taking a little time to design a clear and targeted landing page, your website can increase the number of jobsites you have on the books in the future.

OSHA’s New Fact Sheet: “Safety Walk-Arounds for Managers”

An HBW Safety Update on the latest fact sheet published by OSHA

We often review OSHA’s safety updates and encourage regular review and reinforcement of safety policies, and while most information is geared to all team members, OSHA recently provided a fact sheet “Safety Walk-Arounds for Managers” that is directed to team managers.

Albeit it brief, the fact sheet is important as it provides suggestions for conducting safety inspections that can enable you to evaluate the effectiveness of your current safety and health practices.

Although it should be no secret as to why safety inspections are important, OSHA lists two important purposes:

  1. Inspections demonstrate management’s commitment to improving safety and health by finding and fixing hazards.
  2. Walk-arounds let managers see for themselves how their safety and health program is working and whether it is effective in identifying and eliminating hazards.

The fact sheet lists a safety walk-around in three steps:  Before, during and after inspection:

Prepare:

Identify the most hazardous areas by examining past inspection reports, injury and workers compensation records, incident investigation reports, and recent near-miss incidents. Develop a plan of action so that your inspections focus on the appropriate hazards and concerns.  Communicate and gain feedback from all parties involved, and talk to workplace safety representatives and other managers about their safety observations and concerns. Your plan should include safety equipment needed and areas to look for when onsite.

During Inspection:

When onsite, inspectors and managers should be wearing all of the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for each area.  Limit the group of inspectors to only necessary parties as to not overwhelm or intimidate workers.  When inspecting, look for obvious hazards including but not limited to: tripping hazards; blocked exits; frayed/exposed electrical wires; missing machine guards; poor housekeeping; poorly maintained equipment; property damage. Observe workers as they perform their job. For example, do they lift heavy objects? Do they stand/sit in awkward postures? Are they performing repetitive motions? If so, document it through notes and photos.

While observing activities and conditions is vital to conducting a successful inspection, the process should not be limited to observation.  Communication is a critical component, and it is important to talk to and interact with team members. OSHA suggests asking open-ended questions such as:

  • What is the most hazardous task in your job? What makes it hazardous?
  • If you have been injured in your job, what was the injury and how did it happen? What was done to make your job safer?
  • How would you report an injury, hazard, or near-miss?

Post-Inspection

Your inspection will only be as effective as your follow-up.  Lack of follow-up can lead to discouraged crews and failures in your safety structure. OSHA suggests that immediately following your inspection you should:

  • Prepare an abatement plan containing a list of the hazards found, corrective actions needed, and a reasonable timeline for implementation.
  • Share the abatement plan with managers, supervisors, and workers as a way of showing your commitment to fixing the safety issues found during your inspection.
  • Track progress by sharing or posting periodic updates to the plan. Ensure all corrective actions are implemented in a timely fashion.

For managers who are conducting safety walk-arounds, the general guidelines provided are a good place to start. The communication that takes place during a safety walk-around is just as important as locating and identifying hazards, as it is a chance to engage in mutually respectful communication that can lead to improved team morale, greater onsite safety and increased productivity.

Texas Residential Construction Monthly Review – February 2018

According to U-Haul’s annual study of its truck rental data which reviews the net gain of one-way U-Haul rentals entering a state, Texas remains #1 for domestic relocation. It’s considered to be America’s No. 1 growth state by U-Haul; it has held the title for two years running, and arrivals of one-way U-Haul trucks in Texas have experienced a 1% year-over-year increase.

U-Haul wasn’t the only company to see increased inbound traffic to the South… United Van Lines conducted a similar study and noted that 52% of moves to southern states were inbound.  Overall, the top reasons for moving included new job opportunities, increased proximity to family and retirement.

With all of the inbound traffic to the South and Texas, the demand for housing continues to increase.  According to a report by Niche, the top ranked areas to live in Texas (based on crime, public schools, cost of living, employment opportunities and local amenities) were in the Dallas and Houston areas, and the recent reports from HBW also reflect an increase in housing starts.

According to HBW’s Texas permit report for February, there were more than 5,600 housing starts in Texas last month, reflecting an 8% month-over-month increase in new residential construction across the Lone Star State.  Out of the four major metro areas reviewed (Dallas, Houston, Austin, San Antonio), Houston continued to rank #1 for total starts (2,206 permits), while Dallas continued to hold the higher value of construction with an average of $316,603.  Dallas was not far behind Houston for new construction… In fact, the area experienced an 18% month-over-month increase resulting in 2,075 housing starts and ranking it second highest for total new residential permits last month.

While Austin and San Antonio don’t hold the higher levels of permitting activity as their larger counterparts, residential construction remained healthy in both areas last month. Austin experienced an 11% month-over-month increase in new construction resulting in 777 housing starts, and San Antonio has been steadily climbing since the start of the year as there was a 9% month-over-month increase resulting in 547 housing starts in the area last month.

Information utilized for Texas residential construction reports was directly derived from HBW construction data reports. 5 Reasons to Submit Your Work for an Industry Award

Entering your work into a home building competition may benefit your business in more ways than you thought possible.

With the recent announcement of the 2018 Builder’s Choice & Custom Home Design Awards now accepting entries, it opened the question of why entering such competitions can benefit our subscribers’ businesses.  No matter the size or service your business provides, showcasing your work and success stories can only benefit your business.  There are various awards open to home builders, from local contests and regional trade associations to larger national and even international builder publications and events.  In addition to the Builder’s Choice & Custom Home Design Awards, other widely recognized competitions include but are certainly not limited to:

And the list goes on… Deciding which awards will ultimately be the difficult part; deciding whether or not to enter should be easy.  Although award entries probably don’t even make it to the list of priorities for a busy home building business, it is worth weighing the pros and cons as the return on your investment may be greater than you would expect.  Here are five reasons to consider entering your work into a home builder award competition.

  1. Expand Your Audience – While you may have tried-and-true methods built into your marketing strategy, awards can often open you up to new opportunities within your target market as well as open new supply channels and assist with breaking into new markets. The organization providing the award will also be providing a bit of free marketing for your business as their reach is most likely greater than one single small business, and they will have multiple channels for sharing their award program.
  2. Build Your Reputation – Award programs can serve as a way to gain credibility. No matter if you win top spot or not, having your work recognized and acknowledged by a respected source in the industry gives a little boost to the integrity and reputation of your business.
  3. Engagement Opportunity – From social media to newsletters and personal emails, entering an award gives you another “entry” to your customers and prospects. By inviting contacts to view your work, vote or simply share the honor within their networks, you are providing a no-pressure point for engaging your primary audience.
  4. Team Building – Having a project that is award-ready takes a village. From the designers to the project managers and laborers who made it happen, entering a project can give a boost to your team’s self-esteem and add to your team building efforts.  In addition to the recognition that will go with the awarding organization, your company can take this time to recognize and show appreciation to the valuable team members that contributed to the effort.
  5. Enhance Recruiting – Everyone in the construction industry knows that finding top talent is like finding top grade diamonds; there is a high demand and limited supply. Attracting top talent goes beyond competitive salaries; strong candidates are looking to be part of strong teams that produce quality work.  While awards can’t do it alone, they most certainly add to the perception of your business and can be attractive to industry professionals looking for a new opportunity.

Once you are ready to submit your work for an award, make sure to do your research.  Take time to view previous winners, eligibility requirements and your competition.  While not every award program will be right for your business or reach your desired audience, the right award can open the door to new opportunities and a new perspective on your business.
