Texas Residential Construction Report – October 2022

A summary of permit data for new home construction in Texas during the month of October

During the month of October 2022, there were approximately 7,280 new residential construction permits with a total value of nearly $2.1 billion added to the HBW database for the Lone Star State.

Out of the four major metro areas reviewed (Dallas, Houston, Austin, San Antonio), Dallas carried the greatest amount of new residential construction activity (2,933 permits), while Austin held the highest average value of new residential construction projects (average value: $305,959).

Here is a closer look at the latest construction data derived from Texas residential construction permits on record with HBW during the month of October 2022:

Dallas

Dallas ranked #1 for new home construction, having more than 2,930 new permits with a total construction value of nearly $855 million on record last month.  The average value of new construction in the area landed on the higher end of the spectrum at $291,491, and the majority of all permits originated from the two counties of Tarrant (847 permits) and Collin (915 permits).

Houston

Last month, there were just about 2,780 new residential construction permits with a total value in excess of $760.4 million on record for Houston.  The average value of construction in the Houston area (average value: $273,732) landed on the lower end of the spectrum in comparison to the other metro areas reviewed, and bulk of all new construction took place in Harris County (1,620 permits).

Austin

In Austin, there were nearly 1,175 new residential construction permits with a total value of approximately $359 million last month.  The average value of construction was highest in the Austin area (average value: $305,959) in comparison to other Texas areas reviewed, and the majority of all new permits originated from the two counties of Travis (583 permits) and Williamson (435 permits).

San Antonio

Last month, there were approximately 395 new residential construction permits with a total value in excess of $107.2 million in the San Antonio area.  The average value of new construction was lowest in San Antonio (average value: $272,232) in comparison to other areas reviewed, and the majority of all new home construction took place in Bexar County where there were close to 300 new permits on record for the one-month period.
