Metro Atlanta Swimming Pool Construction Quarterly Review: Q2-2020

A review of permit data based on the latest HBW building activity trend report for new swimming pool construction in the Metro Atlanta area

We are already half way through the year, and Atlanta continues to demonstrate a strong market for swimming pool construction.  Since the start of 2020, there has been a 17 percent year-over-year increase in new swimming pool construction in the Metro Atlanta area, resulting in more than 1,300 new permits on record with HBW for the period running from January through June 2020. That being stated, it is evident that not all counties are equal, as there have been highs and lows in volume of pool starts, as well as growth rates.

Out of the 24 counties that make up the Metro Atlanta area, just over half exhibited construction activity ahead of the same time last year.  When reviewing the latest HBW report to identify where the bulk of new swimming pool construction is taking place, there are three counties that top the chart for holding the highest volume of new permits: Cherokee County (182 permits), Cobb County (180 permits) and Fulton County (175 permits).  While Cherokee County and Cobb County have experienced year-over-year increases in new pool construction of 94 percent and 13 percent respectively, Fulton County is slightly behind last year’s figures by 6 percent.

In addition to the counties that are exhibiting greater concentrations of new pool construction activity, there are other areas that are worth reviewing based on the higher growth rates in pool starts since the beginning of this year.  For example, while Gwinnett County didn’t land on the top three list for total permits, it is an area that appears to coming out of the annual decline in pool construction that was apparent in 2019.  Since the start of this year, Gwinnett County has demonstrated improvement in the market, having a 47 percent year-over-year increase in new swimming pool construction that has resulted in approximately 145 new permits through Q2-2020. Other Metro Atlanta area counties that have experienced year-over-year increases in new swimming pool construction since the start of this year include Fayette County (+14%), Henry County (+29%), and Walton County (+70%).
