Texas Residential Construction Review – November 2023

Based on HBW’s latest construction data reports, there were 4,320 new residential construction permits with a total value of nearly $1.3 billion on record last month for Texas. Out of the four metro areas included in the reports (Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio), Houston carried the greatest volume of housing starts (1,899 permits), while the highest average value of new home construction could be found in the Dallas area (average value: $332,907).

Here is a breakdown of the permit data for new residential construction by Texas area during the month of November 2023:

Houston

As previously noted, Houston carried the highest amount of new home construction activity last month, having approximately 1,900 new permits with a total construction value of $533 million on record with HBW.  The average value of new home construction was $280,666, and more than 75 percent of new permits originated from the counties of Montgomery (767 permits) and Harris (671 permits).

Dallas

In Dallas, there were more than 1,700 new residential construction permits with a total value of approximately $567 million last month.  The average value of new home construction was highest in Dallas (average value: $332,907) in comparison to other metro areas reviewed, and the counties with the greatest amount of new residential construction activity for the one-month period were Collin County (589 permits) and Tarrant County (466 permits).

San Antonio

In San Antonio, there were nearly 400 new residential construction permits with a total value of approximately $85 million last month.  The average value of new home construction was lowest in San Antonio (average value: $213,783) in comparison to other Texas areas reviewed, and the majority of new home construction activity took place in Bexar County (258 permits).

Austin

Last month, there were more than 320 new residential construction permits with a total value in excess of $102.5 million in the Austin area.  The average value of new home construction was $319,796, and the counties with the highest concentration of new construction activity were Travis (117 permits) and Williamson (110 permits).
