Texas Residential Construction Review – April 2024

Based on the latest construction data reports available from HBW, there were more than 7,900 new residential construction permits with a total value of nearly $2.5 billion added to the HBW database for Texas last month.  Out of the four major Texas Metro areas reviewed (Dallas, Houston, Austin, San Antonio), the greatest volume of housing starts could be found in the Houston area where there were 4,022 new permits, while the highest average value of construction could be found in Dallas (average value: $389,557).

Here is a closer look at the total permits, construction values, and leading counties for new home construction in Texas during the month of April:

Houston

As noted above, Dallas carried the greatest volume of new home construction in comparison to other Texas areas reviewed last month, having 4,022 new permits with a total construction value in excess of $1.1 billion added to the HBW database. The average value of new residential construction projects was $285,718, and the majority of all new permits originated from the counties of Harris (1,667 permits) and Montgomery (1,074 permits).

Dallas

Last month, Dallas ranked #2 for new home construction having 2,085 new residential construction permits with a total value in excess of $812 million on record with HBW.  The average value of construction was highest in Dallas (average value: $389,557) in comparison to other Texas areas reviewed, and more than half of all new permits originated from Collin County (1,155 permits).

San Antonio

Last month, there were just over 910 new residential construction permits with a total value of approximately $194 million in San Antonio.  The average value of new home construction was lowest in San Antonio (average value: $212,685) in comparison to other metro areas reviewed, and well more than half of all new construction took place in Bexar County where there were 646 permits on record for the one-month period.

Austin

In Austin, there were approximately 890 new residential construction permits with a total value of nearly $297 million during the month of April. The average value of new home construction was $334,197, and half of all new construction took place in Travis County where there were 444 new permits on record for the one-month period.
