Texas home builders ended 2017 on a high note having more than 5,760 new residential construction permits added to the HBW database in December.
Texas New Residential Construction Permits by Area – December 2017
The end of the year gave Texas much to celebrate. Having experienced a 55% month-over-month increase in new residential construction, there were 5,764 housing starts throughout the major metro areas of Houston, Dallas, Austin and San Antonio. Every area across the board experienced significant month-over-month increases with Houston seeing the greatest gains at 75%. Out of the more than $1.3B in total construction value for the month, the highest average value of construction could be found in Dallas at nearly $285k. As for home builders, D.R. Horton continued to hold top position in three out of four metro areas (all with the exception of San Antonio). Here is a closer look at the stats and top builders in each area for the month of December:
Houston
In Houston, there were nearly 2,600 housing starts (+75% since November) with a total construction value of approximately $522M. Just about half of all new construction could be found in Harris County (1,289 permits), and more than 300 home builders were active throughout the area during the month.

Dallas
Dallas ranked second-highest for total housing starts having a 33% month-over-month increase resulting in more than 1,800 new permits and a construction value in excess of $514M for the one-month period. There were more than 230 active home builders in the Dallas area last month, and the highest concentration of new construction could be found in Tarrant County (672 permits).

Austin
Austin experienced a 65% month-over-month increase in housing starts having 867 new permits and a construction value of $207.5M for the month. There were approximately 120 active builders in the Austin area last month, and more than half of all new construction took place in Travis County (550 permits).

San Antonio
While San Antonio had the lowest total number of starts, December was a solid month as there was a month-over-month increase in new home construction of 37% in the area. Last month there were approximately 130 active builders responsible for nearly 500 housing starts with a total construction value in excess of $102M. While all counties had new permits added to the HBW database, the highest concentration (more than half) of all housing starts took place in Bexar County (259 permits).
