A review of permit data for new residential construction in Texas during the month of June 2020
Last month, there were 6,843 housing starts with a total construction value of nearly $1.7 billion added to the HBW database for Texas. Out of the four major metropolitan areas reviewed (Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio), Houston ranked #1 for total new residential construction permits on record for the one-month period (2,846 permits), while Dallas continued to lead for holding the highest average value of new home construction (average value: $298k+).
Based on the latest construction permit data available from the HBW database, here is a breakdown of total new permits, leading counties and average values for new home construction across the Lone Star State:
Houston
As previously mentioned, Houston held the highest concentration of housing starts last month having 2,846 new residential construction permits with a total value in excess of $561 million. The average value of new home construction was lowest in Houston (average value: $197,202) in comparison to other areas reviewed, and more than half of all new residential construction activity took place in Harris County (1,530 permits).
Dallas
Not far behind Houston, Dallas had 2,624 housing starts with a total construction value of nearly $783 million on record with HBW last month. The average value of new home construction continues to remain highest in Dallas (average value: $298,275) in comparison to other Texas areas reviewed, and the counties with the greatest concentration of new home construction activity include Collin County (830 permits) and Tarrant County (703 permits).
Austin
In Austin, there were 977 housing starts with a total construction value of approximately $248 million during the month of June 2020. The average value of new home construction in the Austin area (average value: $253,943) landed mid-range in comparison to other metro areas reviewed, and more than half of all new permits originated from Travis County (514 permits).
San Antonio
Last month, there were nearly 400 housing starts with a total construction value of nearly $98 million in the San Antonio area. The average value of new home construction was $246,903, and nearly all new permits originated from Bexar County (339 permits).
